Chapdelaine:
Tribute to an American Maestro
A musical appreciation by guitarists who shared the stage with Michael Chapdelaine: one year on, we celebrated & looked to extend his legacy.
Michael Chapdelaine (1956 – 2023) remains the only fingerstyle guitarist to have won the most coveted competitions in both classical (Guitar Foundation of America International) and steel string (National Fingerstyle Championships Winfield, Kansas).
A Magical Evening
Musicians who performed with, studied under, and knew Michael gathered for a one-of-a-kind performance – a benefit for the Chapdelaine Scholarship Fund and the Chapdelaine Music Team that keeps his music alive.
We paired NOLA cuisine from our friends at Gentilly (gumbo, red beans & rice, pulled pork) with Umbriaso wines to raise money for the scholarship fund.
Thanks to our featured artists:
- Teja Gerken – has enchanted audiences ever since coming onto the acoustic fingerstyle scene in the late 1990s, weaving together his diverse musical interest into a style that is his own. Teja shares his passion for guitar & community as a writer, video editor, and accomplished champion for all things acoustic guitar (see Peghead Nation).
- Doug Young – a polished fingerstyle guitarist, composer, author, recording engineer, and International Acoustic Music Awards winner.
- Dave Ricketts – a return TIW engagement for this dynamic founder and bandleader for internationally known Gaucho Jazz (gypsy jazz/blues/gutbucket music) and solo guitarit/vocalist extradinaire.
- Michael Lich – classical guitarist, banjo-player, arranger, and composer, Michael Lich is an eclectic and accomplished musician who performs a wide variety of musical styles including classical, jazz, and bluegrass.

Hôtel Biron Grand Reopening
The Hôtel Biron, a wine & art bar with a bohemian vibe, is re-opening under new management and Umbriaso is proud to be part of the relaunch.
Our critically acclaimed 2017 Tuscan Blend will be the first ever featured wine on the menu.
The venue, on Rose St. a few steps from the Zuni Café, had enjoyed a devoted clientele – and a reputation as an intimate, non-touristic gathering spot for locals. It’s bustling again with an eager staff, curating fine wine, music, fun events, and featuring local artists, including one whose CV includes the de Young Museum. Five artists will adorn the Hôtel Biron’s walls for the re-launch celebration. Among them, Kundan Baidwan, Chelsea Robot, Alvar Jacomet, Marianna Kiraly, and Tyler Wintermute. Popup local chefs will add food pairings.
When asked what he had envisioned for Hôtel Biron, new owner Ron Ramsubhag simply said, “wine, art, and community.”
In an Instagram post, Ron explained why he elected to feature the 2017 Tuscan Blend. “It was such a pleasure to meet winemaker Dennis Hayes and taste some of his amazing wines at Treasure Island Wines. With every glass of wine poured, you can feel the art, passion, and care Dennis puts in.”
The reboot is set for September 27th, 28th, & 29th from 5pm.
See you there!

Bud Break Party
Fine weather supported our Bud Break party as we celebrated the official start of the 2024 vintage with the fabulous Crying Uncle Bluegrass Band and Rock Club Burgers.
Widely recognized as one of the most exciting young bands in acoustic music, Crying Uncle played a unique mix of bluegrass, jazz, and modern originals. Last year the band received the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Momentum Band of the Year award. They were also honored to perform for the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame’s induction of their hero, David Grisman. In February, they performed at the Grand Ole Opry and the Station Inn in Nashville, TN.

Veraison Party
Our season finale was a hit with our sold out guests who enjoyed fine wines, gourmet Bulgarian street food, and the fab bop jazz of Jason Gillenwater.
But wait, Veraison? Each year, winemakers welcome veraison, the “ripening” before harvest. As the hard green orbs mature and plump out, sugar rises, acid retreats, and August delivers a carousel of photo-ops – the multi-colored clusters that cue harvest time.
Bulgarian Street Food
What better way to honor veraison than by featuring savory cuisine from the Kuker Bulgarian food truck. We featured Jivka and Geny’s very best:
- Fisherman’s stew – Local Black/Rock Cod & Shrimp, with Chickpeas and signature Mastica Sauce
- Grilled Mary’s Chicken (Gluten Free) – Yogurt Marinated with Herb Polenta Cake and Organic Mixed greens salad
- Shopska Salad – award winning salad with Heirloom Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Fire Roasted Sweet Peppers, Green onions, Fresh Herbs & Bulgarian White Cheese. (No Cheese Vegan Option)
- Leeks Banitsa – Hand-Rolled Phyllo Dough Pastry with Organic Leeks, Eggs, Bellwether Ricotta, Bulgarian White Cheese & Chives
Jason Gillenwater Quartet
Jason Gillenwater brought the bop, showcasing his regionally famous jazz stylings with finesse and swing across an original as well as standard repertoire.

Prosthetics for Ukrainians Benefit
Ollie Dudek Bay Area Connection Trio
Join us as we acknowledge & celebrate the Ukrainian soldier and civilian amputees here in the Bay Area getting fitted for prosthetics – and the organization that makes it happen. The benefit is for Prosthetics for Ukrainians, a project of the nonprofit Protez organization, that is playing a role both crucial and timely.
War always has its collateral damage, its widows and orphans. In Ukraine the damage is more intentional than collateral, cities of rubble with blown up infrastructure and people with blown off limbs. A new breed of prosthetic makers has sprung up to patch arms and legs back on soldiers and civilians. The amputees fly halfway around the world to the advanced medical facilities here in San Francisco where they find strangers who greet them as family. They get state-of-the-art prosthetics and rehabilitation therapy.
The ones these doctors, nurses, and craftsmen call “heroes” are renewed, and go back to their lives with dignity. Each case is a life-changing miracle for them, and more miracles are limited only by the resources available.
Treasure Island Wines and Umbriaso are hosting a fundraising event to expand those resources and multiply those miracles. We invite you to join us for a special event at our winery on Treasure Island for an afternoon of music, food, and wine and a chance to meet some of these renewed heroes and the amazing miracle workers of Prosthetics for Ukrainians who make it happen.
Price of admission includes:
- A donation to Prosthetics for Ukrainians by Umbriaso and Treasure Island Wines.
- Fine rotisserie from the original gourmet food truck Roli Roti
- The Bay Area Connection Jazz trio
- Raffle tickets to library wines from Umbriaso and Treasure Island Wines.
We will open our parklet and indoor tasting room for this event.
A substantial portion of the admission will be donated to Prosthetics for Ukraine by Umbriaso and Treasure Island Wines.

A sold out crowd grooved to the swing jazz of Le Jazu. Taking advantage of the lush acoustics, the band staged and recorded their performance under the apse on our production floor. And Chris, Jennifer and daughter Lizzie from Rainy Day Chocolate brought their exquisite bean-to-bar offerings.
Many stayed late; none left without a fresh cut stemmed rose.
Le Jazu brought their elegant swing jazz, blues, soul, and manouche to our stage for an encore engagement.

Clive Carroll
in Concert
English acoustic guitar virtuoso Clive Carroll delighted a crowd of nearly 80 Umbriaso and Treasure Island Wines patrons on 10 November 2018. Clive performed two sets in the apse of the Treasure Island Winery.
“The acoustics are astounding,” remarked Clive after the sound check.
Flanked by oak barrels, Clive’s lush sound resonated with a natural reverb. Clive performed selections from his extensive repertoire of original compositions and arrangements as well as new material that will be included on his next CD. Among them, Clive’s 12-minute Scottish Suite. His arrangement of Charles Mingus’ Pork Pie Hat dropped jaws (and inspired one patron to go straight home and study it).
